Frequently Asked Questions

Are VoIP systems more expensive?

They needn't be, and they might even be cheaper than a legacy system. Prices vary considerably between systems and manufacturers, so compare prices and facilities carefully, like any other important purchase.

Do I have to use the internet for all my calls? I've heard that it's not so reliable.

VoIP gives you the choice of using the internet, or standard BT lines, or a mix of both, to make and receive calls. That gives you an extra layer of redundancy should one of the services (BT or the internet) fail. It's true that BT lines can be more reliable than broadband connections, but the latter has improved greatly in recent years and is getting better all the time. This also depends on your location, in some places the broadband will be as good as standard phone lines, in other places (particularly rural areas far from the exchange) it may be less so.

Can I keep my existing phone number?

Yes. If you're staying at the same location, the new system can connect to the same BT lines as you currently use. If you're moving, you can 'port' the number to an internet provider, and it can go anywhere with you.

Will I need to upgrade the cabling in my building?

Maybe. If you have a computer network system already cabled (and most businesses do) then probably not. However you might need some additional capacity if there aren't enough sockets to go round. If you use phones connected directly to a PC, then you might actually need less cabling.

Can I use my cordless headset with a VoIP system? I'd be lost without it.

Yes. Most headsets can work with a VoIP system, although you might need an adapter. Alternatively, there are lots of headsets made especially that can be used.

What about conference phones?

Yes, same as for headsets above.

I travel a lot on business. Can I use this when I'm abroad?

Yes. If you carry a laptop with you on your travels, a small and simple earpiece (or even the mic and speakers on your machine) together with appropriate software will let you attach to the system from almost anywhere.

I use Skype at home to speak to my relatives in Australia. Is that VoIP?

Yes it is. Skype is a great system, used by millions. The technology it uses is VoIP to transmit calls over the internet between individuals. As such it's not a replacement for a company system, but ideal for families to keep in touch for free.
